Who’s Got Style??

urbancosummerchallengeHello there my fashion junkies, long time no post lol. It’s time that we get this summer started with a little style contest. If you know anyone that has style, designs or just likes to dress up for fun, tell them to enter Urban Couture’s first style contest. But this isn’t just any old contest where you get dresssed up and send in random pics. There are rules that apply.

 Rules go as follows:

  • You must incorporate three summer essentials; shorts, the color yellow and a tank or sleeveless shirt (as shown above; ladies make it into something you can work).
  • You must submit a picture with your name, age, and city to urbancouturecontact@gmail.com.
  • You must be as creative as possible. Use nice backdrops, props, even drag your friend in the pic for more of an edge.
  • THE FULL ENSEMBLE MUST BE VISIBLE!!!

Take the look and make it your own with lots of accessories and summer pizazz!!! Not everyone can take something so simple and turn it into the “IT” factor and I want to see if you can. The winner will be featured on Urban Couture in a full fleged interview with both myself and Joe Couture. They will also receive a $30 gift card to the store of their choice, so come with it and may the best person win!!!

Maxed Out: A Shopoholic’s Tale

bmore-014

As I write this, as I listen to random hits shuffling on my iTunes, I think of how wrong my parents and other people were in telling me that college students endure a struggle for the 4 or more years that we’re on this whirlwind adventure known as college. Hmm… I wonder have they ever visited Howard University…? I mean, aside from making sure I’m settled into my dorm room for the semester, have they actually taken a look around and witnessned the grandeur that is the life of a Howard student? Sure, many try to disguise they’re collegiate life as a struggle, but let’s get real: A “typical” college student is NOT pairing a Fendi Spy bag with Seven Jeans and Tory Burch pumps or Joe’s Jeans with D&G Sneakers and a Cole Haan bag to attend classes.

That’s not to say that’s the reason why I’m writing this, but it is one of the many. I am writing this to admit that, I, Joseph Brian Blackmon Jr. aka Marty McFlyy aka JoeCouture, am a major shopoholic. And I must say it has gotten completely out of control. I am writing this series to help those out there who know they have the problem, but are afraid to admit it… But getting back to myself…

I don’t know where to begin! I was never like this before… I was the plain ole’, Old Navy and Gap, Sale and Clearance Rack connoisseur. I swore I never would pay anything over $40 for a pair of jeans. Buying premium labels? Didn’t mean a thing to me. Then it all just happened… Now, I’m owner of 15-20 pairs of Cole Haan shoes, I can fill a closet or two with my footwear alone, my denim looks like (well, slightly) like The Rail at Nordstrom, and I’m in a-excuse my French- shitload of debt (something I will discuss later on in the series…). I have become totally out of control.

It could possibly a newfound freedom for me… who knows?!? All my life, I’ve never really had clothes, since my everyday look consisted of wool blend slacks and blue or white oxfords of Flynn and O’Hara designs. Being in Catholic school all of my life, I’ve never been able to have a lot of clothing and footwear. I was stuck with that same pair of black Kenneth Cole of Hush Puppies. So, coming here to HU, no uniforms, no restrictions, I can wear whatever I want and, thanks to the job (which is a great reason why I’m damn near hitting rock bottom), I can buy whatever I wanted, with no remorse. At least the remorse that comes back to haunt you some months down the line…

Throughout this series, I plan discuss everything that has and is going through my head when I’m making (or tempted to make) a purchase…. From credit cards (DON’T DO IT!!!! CREDIT CARDS ARE THE COLLEGE STUDENT’S DEVIL!!!), to trying to keep up with the Joneses, and everything in between… This is a journey to recovery… One of self-discovery and true self-worth as well… Are you ready for the ride?

Fashion Gurus of The Week… Past Few Months Actually…

dsc01340

NAME: Michelle Najla Anthony

AGE: 20

HOMETOWN: Philadelphia, PA & Liberia

1. WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN CHOOSING YOUR CLOTHING?

The main thing that inspires me when choosing particular clothing to wear is sophistication and neatness. I like to look stylish, but also keep it simple. Color also plays a major role when I am choosing clothing. I like to mix things up, not always too bright but a little color.

2. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE LABLES/DESIGNERS AND WHY?

I don’t really have a favorite label or designer because at the moment I cannot really afford the things that I would like to wear… Fashion can be high priced and affordable. There are places where you can go that have nice and affordable clothing,  from H&M to Heritage. Then there’s high priced clothing from,  Roc & Republic jeans to shoes like Jimmy Choos. I mean if you are a real FASHONISTA, you can make anything look name brand.

3. NAME A FEW PIECES (CLOTHING, SHOES, ACCESSORIES, ETC.) THAT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT…

I cannot live without my heels and cardigans. I love them.

4. WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO/PREDICTING FOR THE FUTURE (NEXT SEASON, NEXT YEAR…)?

Well I’m hoping for a new look next season… I’m not really into the bright weird color look but people can pull it off and I don’t knock them for that. I’m looking for something different and hopefully trendy.

HOMETOWN: Queens, NY

1. WHAT INSPIRES YOU WHEN CHOOSING YOUR CLOTHING?

The thing that inspires me the most when I choose my clothes is my mood. If I’m feeling a certain way, I tend to choose clothing that may reflect that, yet still looks good on me.

2. WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE LABELS/DESIGNERS AND WHY?

I don’t have one favorite label. If I like it and it looks good on me, that’s my favorite for the time being, whether it’s H&M or BCBG. My favorite designer will hopefully forever be Chanel, but I also like relatively new designers like Zac Posen. Chanel is just timeless and you can mix and match a Chanel jacket with Gap jeans. Zac Posen is fresh and I love the fit and lines of his clothes.

3. NAME A FEW PIECES (CLOTHING, SHOES, ACCESSORIES, ETC.) THAT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT…

I can’t live without my iPhone and iPod, my Tory Burch flats, and Asos.com.

4. WHAT TRENDS ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO/PREDICTING FOR THE FUTURE (NEXT SEASON, NEXT YEAR…)?

I’m glad that chunky stacked heel trend is still around because they tend to be sky high and actually the most comfortable. Although I like the padded shoulders in jackets and shirts trend, it may not take off like others. Even so I may try to get my hands on a cute little blazer or jacket with padded shoulders (not too much padding of course) to mix with a white tee shirt, some denim shorts and a pair of Keds. Cute, comfortable, and affordable all in one.
